Sports and Education: Allies for Personal Development

Sports have always been an integral part of human development, with athletes demonstrating superior physical abilities, strength, agility, or endurance suitable for various physical activities.

Joel Smith, a specialist in vertical jump and cardiac performance training at the University of California, Berkeley, emphasizes that proper physical conditioning can lead to better team performance and individual player longevity, free from injuries or setbacks. However, Smith also highlights that mental development, motor learning, and group dynamics significantly enhance an athlete’s performance when combined with physical conditioning and learning.

Mary Willingham from the University of North Carolina shared a poignant story about a young athlete who couldn't read or write: “He wanted me to teach him to read well enough so that he could read about himself in the news, which was very important to him” (Ganim, CNN, 2014). Mary's goal was to support athletes with inadequate academic preparation to meet the required level at UNC Chapel Hill, one of the best public universities in the United States.

This underscores the importance of both physical and academic preparation for students, especially those interested in participating in the U.S. collegiate sports system. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) organizes most university sports events in the country and serves as a crucial gateway to major leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLS.

The NCAA is a well-funded organization with academic and sports programs that pave the way for professional-level competition. Annually, about 480,000 athletes from 1,281 universities compete in the NCAA. Scholarships for studies can range from $120,000 to $400,000 (covering four years of college and competition). The NCAA generates one billion dollars in revenue, with 70% allocated to sports scholarships and 17% to support programs.

For athletes aspiring to join American leagues, the NCAA offers a significant opportunity, which DiME presents to its students. DiME’s goal is the holistic development of students through a program designed for those who seek an appropriate balance between academic and athletic demands. The focus is on enabling students to continue their sports careers while receiving excellent academic preparation.

Through partnerships with national and international institutions, DiME offers triple certification among Mexico, the United States, and the CTE (Career and Technical Education), with certified courses reviewed every three years. Each course is approved by the NCAA, allowing student-athletes to maintain their academic and athletic training without the need for translations or credit approvals. Additionally, DiME supports the application for sports scholarships based on the student's level and ranking in NCAA Divisions 1, 2, and 3.

The advantages provided by DiME in this area include:

  • Free SAT courses for DiME students, ensuring a 90% success rate in university admissions in the U.S.
  • TOEFL IBT certification courses (valid for four years), preparing students for studies in Mexico and abroad.
  • Business and engineering courses that allow students to explore different career paths before choosing their field of study.
  • CTE and STEM certifications (coming soon).
  • AP (Advanced Placement) courses to improve GPA and gain access to better universities and, consequently, NCAA teams.

Participating in the NCAA offers students a multicultural experience, balancing educational, social, and sports activities, and achieving an excellent academic level to continue their sports dreams.
